Introduction : Turmeric is the dried root of curcuma longa. It is a very important herb in Indian Ayurvedic medicine. A symbol of prosperity, Turmeric has been used for centuries in the Indian traditional system of medicine, as a spice and a natural food colour. Turmeric is also seen as an excellent natural antibiotic.
Plant Description : A native of India and Indonesia, Turmeric is a perennial plant with a pulpy, orange, tuberous roots that grow to about 2 feet in length. The aerial parts, which reach 3 feet, include large, lily-like leaves, a thick, squat, central flower spike and funnel-shaped yellow flowers.
History : Turmeric is an ancient Indian spice and a traditional remedy that has been used as a medicine, condiment and flavoring. As per Indian Ayurvedic text turmeric can be taken on a daily basis to improve body immunity.

In a study in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, India conducted by NIN (National institute of nutrition) Hyderabad, painting turmeric on the inner cheeks has led to preventing mouth cancers in women who have the habit of reverse smoking.
Test-tube studies done in the 1990s which indicate that curcumin is as powerful an antioxidant as vitamins C and E, and even beta-carotene. Antioxidants are powerful preservatives, so turmeric has long been sprinkled on food to help retain its freshness.
Animal studies provide evidence that turmeric can protect the liver from a number of damaging substances such as carbon tetrachloride and acetominophen.
